"Igniting the Fire Within: Stories of Healing, Hope & Humor" is a collection of essays from the first six years of Wildfire Magazine.

"These essays — raging, howling, and celebrating small victories — reflect the varied and vivid emotions that explode when youth and cancer collide. For those under 50 (but really for anyone) who has been told “you have breast cancer,” the voices in this essay collection will feel hauntingly familiar. To every young person diagnosed with cancer who feels alone and unseen, this book is for you.” - Catherine Guthrie, award-winning health journalist and author of the memoir FLAT: Reclaiming My Body From Breast Cancer.

A few years ago, Meghan began working on a memoir. This manuscript was intended to reflect on the unlikely spiritual teachers and experiences that began showing up in her life decades ago, allowing her to become a conscious creator.

In the midst of this work she was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. Her life and work came to a sudden halt. Although she had to discontinue her work on the memoir, she did manage to write intermittently about her treatment and experiences living with a life-changing diagnosis.

Like so many of life's challenges, she discovered that this illness was a powerful teacher and an opportunity for growth, so she set aside her prior work and began to follow this new thread.

She is now nearly finished with an entirely new manuscript about moving through breast cancer treatment while maintaining a spiritual mindset and navigating the divide between conventional treatment and alternative methods of healing. Here's an excerpt:

I listen to everything being said, and yet, it registers as if I am hovering above myself, observing a ubiquitous scene in a movie, cancer having become all too common. The size of the tumor is described (smallish), and the grade (menacing). I suddenly become privy to things I haven’t known before—proliferation index and types of receptors as indicators for treatment.

I hold the phone between my head and shoulder and begin typing into my computer. I am strangely efficient, giving the document a title, “breast cancer,” putting words and actions to the page I have no interest in ever impressing upon my being.

My body is for breathing through in the still quiet of dawn and for filling up with luscious green foods—sprouts and arugula and celery. It is for standing tall in, engaging my core muscles, and learning to invite my rib cage upward so it won’t land like a heavy basket, set-upon my lower back. It is for experiencing the earth on all corners of my feet sunk in soil, learning to find balance upon this tilted planet. My body is for cradling what is unique and infinite and timeless in me and for connecting with the universal in us all.

It is not for this.

Timeless Kids

"For the last decade, I have taken thousands of photos of my children engaged in their surroundings. Of all of the images I put into the world, this is the work that resides most fully in my heart."

"It has been my goal to minimize my boys' exposure to electronic devices. To put them in the path of the natural world and opportunities for creativity as much as possible."

"Even so, they love Star Wars and the NFL. They also like to curl up on the couch and get lost in a book. They often come bursting inside breathless with the story of a new discovery—dirt caked underneath their nails. Sometimes they decide to poke a hole in a roasted marshmallow and fashion it into a telescope."

"When I am able to witness or capture these moments, it's like falling into a pleasant dream."

"In the Timeless Kids Collection, I have compiled images of children immersed in their surroundings both exciting and mundane.:

"My hope is that these images can be an inspiration to drop into the ordinary and to recognize majesty in the day-to-day." —Meghan Nathanson

Poetry Spotlight

"A few years ago, I was working in our garden, untangling a runaway mint plant. I began thinking about the way the challenges and rewards of being in the natural world mirror my role as a mother. This poem came out of those reflections."

Let You Be Glad

For you, let the roots in me grow deep and sturdy as a mint plant gone wild in my garden bed boldly. Let my love be relentless, taking root as immovable, tangled stems not to be untwined. Let my mind be sharp like rose thorns, ready for word from the divine, clear as the prick of brambles through soil stained gloves. Let my presence matter like spring gusts of wind that come, “I’m here!” “I’m here!”

Let you be glad I am here.

Let forgiveness be abundant, pardons plentiful as the thousand acorns on the back porch. Let me be serene and yielding as the tides, responding always to the seasons of you. Letting in and out the cosmic flow of you.And let me warm you like the near sun when winter sun’s distance and darkness have lingered.”

Artist & Writer Statement

I notice beauty everywhere. I see it in the rusty nail, the broken fence. I see it in the crying face, the rounded hips. I see it when I am looking at your skin closely as you speak. I notice your freckles, your blemishes, your unkempt hair. I love those things. I love a freshly made bed, water dripping from your eyelashes when you come from the shower, shadows and golden leaves. I am moved by the texture of wool socks and acorn tops, heat coming off of a wood stove, the way my arms twist above me when I dance, the slap on a table in frustration. My work is about these things. It’s about the human experience and what happens in the seemingly ordinary moments of truly living.
