A few years ago, Meghan began working on a memoir. This manuscript was intended to reflect on the unlikely spiritual teachers and experiences that began showing up in her life decades ago, allowing her to become a conscious creator.
In the midst of this work she was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. Her life and work came to a sudden halt. Although she had to discontinue her work on the memoir, she did manage to write intermittently about her treatment and experiences living with a life-changing diagnosis.
Like so many of life's challenges, she discovered that this illness was a powerful teacher and an opportunity for growth, so she set aside her prior work and began to follow this new thread.
She is now nearly finished with an entirely new manuscript about moving through breast cancer treatment while maintaining a spiritual mindset and navigating the divide between conventional treatment and alternative methods of healing. Here's an excerpt:
I listen to everything being said, and yet, it registers as if I am hovering above myself, observing a ubiquitous scene in a movie, cancer having become all too common. The size of the tumor is described (smallish), and the grade (menacing). I suddenly become privy to things I haven’t known before—proliferation index and types of receptors as indicators for treatment.
I hold the phone between my head and shoulder and begin typing into my computer. I am strangely efficient, giving the document a title, “breast cancer,” putting words and actions to the page I have no interest in ever impressing upon my being.
My body is for breathing through in the still quiet of dawn and for filling up with luscious green foods—sprouts and arugula and celery. It is for standing tall in, engaging my core muscles, and learning to invite my rib cage upward so it won’t land like a heavy basket, set-upon my lower back. It is for experiencing the earth on all corners of my feet sunk in soil, learning to find balance upon this tilted planet. My body is for cradling what is unique and infinite and timeless in me and for connecting with the universal in us all.
It is not for this.
